Ever heard of the Social Bookmarking sites like Reddit, Digg or even Twitter? If not, you might want to start learning about them. Social Bookmarking is a way for internet users to share their favorite website pages with friends and others. These website pages can contain funny images, videos, quality information or just the latest news. Some Social Bookmarking sites even allow the most popular web pages to be shown on the top of a public list, so visitors can easily be notified about the most popular web pages.
The first Social Bookmarking sites founded on a dot-com address came to our attention in 2003. For other users to be able to see what kind of pages were being saved the most often, turned out to be a highly successful concept for a website. But not until a few years later, with the combination of internet on mobile phones, people really started using these sites to spread the news to their friends or just to see what is new on the web.
Every time a website page wants to be shared, the user simply saves the page with tags along it.
The saving is called Bookmarking. This method allows users to store links to the pages without saving the files and not having any trouble with copyrights. Along with these pages, the user will also submit a number of words that describe the page, making it easier for Search Engines to tell what kind of data will be found on that page. So If I use a Search Engine and look for words that are used to Bookmark a recently popular web page, it will give me that result at the top of its list.
This method also made it easier for good new websites to be spread quicker than it would without Social Bookmarking, requiring far less advertisement to be promoted.
The trouble with this method is that people tend to use different kinds of websites that allow Social Bookmarking and use different types of words to describe the page. Keywords are free to choose and not even the same words will be written down in the same way. This means that if there is more than one page that qualifies for my search, I might end up with the top twenty results being from one web page, because it has been Bookmarked so often. But this also means that even if I mistype a search, I might end up with right result anyway by people who used the same mistyped tags.
All in all, these Social Bookmarking sites are very useful and have become very popular. Try to find a Social Bookmarking site that uses spam filters and where people can vote for the most popular bookmarks. This way you will avoid advertisement or even a scam.
Invite or ask your friends what kind of Social Bookmarking site they use and start sharing all those funny or interesting web pages you have come across, with the rest of the world.
