If the big discussion seems to be about funny Obama clothing, you would look a bit foolish to post a picture of Scarlet Johansen. Try to stay in line with the apparent theme, or your pictures and videos may not be posted at all. Also make sure that what you want to post is decent, meaning that there are no gruesome components or aspects that could be labeled as pornography. Try to stay within the confines of the site rules in order to ensure that your post will be seen.
Most picture blogs will allow you to put a caption on your pictures. This is your chance to shine. You might have a completely off topic video or image, but if you have a clever enough caption, you might be able to tie everything together. You can make something bland seem funny by just adding a line of humor in the caption. Of course, you can leave that off, but then you are not fully utilizing your opportunities. This will lessen the success of your image overall, which may be bad if you are in a competition of sorts.
Overall, the best pictures on the web are those that stir up conversation. If you can go beyond the traditional and really think outside the box, you might be able to get your name out there. Pictures that hold great controversy or are very funny in nature are going to be the top rated or at least most discussed images on the web. Pick something to post that is going to really get people thinking. You will see a lot more success that way than just posting a picture with no thought behind what you put up.
