What is Search Engine Optimization?
By Art Gib
It used to be when you wanted to offer a product or service to the world you had to start small, usually by creating a local company, and then branching out as the success of the company grew. Today things are different.
With the introduction of the internet people have been able to create companies that don”t even need a store front; they just need a website. However, there are now millions of people online creating new sites, new blogs, and everything in between. With so much competition out there how do you get your site noticed? That’’s a question many people are asking. The answer is through search engine optimization or SEO.
Search engine optimization is basically the process of changing your website to come up more often in the search engines. Most of the major search engines have ‘’spiders” or web programs that comb the HTML of sites looking for certain keywords and items in the HTML. Working with an SEO company, your site is changed to be more appealing to these ‘’spiders” so the site gets more visitors.
While this may be confusing to some, it’’s not something you, as a site owner, have to do by yourself. There are plenty of SEO consultants and SEO companies who specialize in making sites show up more on the major search engines. These specialists will work with you to come up with the keywords that most relate to your service but that are popular searches as well. Many of them will also ”play” with the keywords, creating different phrases and options so your site will come up in a variety of searches.
You, as an entrepreneur, benefit from an SEO because the more exposure you have, the more customers you have, and the more sales your company makes. More exposure equals more sales. However, that doesn”t mean that you should go with the first SEO company you find. When searching for a company, don”t get caught up on guarantees. Listen to what they offer and what they”ll do, but it’’s not possible to be guaranteed the top spot.
A good company will be up front with you about the services they offer and what those services will cost. Ask about previous clients and ask for references. This is where you”ll get very reliable information. Take your time deciding on the company, because they will more than likely be working with you for quite a while. And remember, while at first it may not seem worth it, in the end when your sales are up you”ll be happy you did some SEO on your website.
