Web Directories: An Introduction
By Nadeem Shareef
Web directory is the storage area of the links of the websites that are categorized on a particular basis. Links will redirect to other websites of the same category. Online web directories are compared to RSS directories (really simple syndication). In RSS directories, instead of links, RSS feeds are used. However, both are similar in operation.
Web directories are created by editors. If the website owner wants to include their website into the directory, he must send it for review by editors. After reviewing, if the editor feels it fits into the directory, it is classified according to some specifications and a link is added to the website.
Web Directory Categorization
Web directories are categorized according to basic strategies like language, purpose, and location. Whenever a website is submitted into a web directory, it is reviewed and classified following some niche. Importance is given to keywords, so web directories are also classified according to the keywords. Some are classified according to the fields like business, sports, and education.
Using the Web Directory
Whenever a user searches for a business, he has to fill in his basic details like phone number etc. This information is passed to you with the user’’s consent. You may then immediately call the user and convert him into your customer by explaining the specialties of your business.
On the other hand, web directories include links next to the business information. These links are parsed by the search engines and are arranged as per the keywords that you used while submitting your website. So whenever a user types in the keyword in the search engine, chances are that your website will appear in the search results. This helps in building better web traffic to your website. These back links also help in increasing the page rank of your website so that users can easily be convinced about the services or products you offer. It is a win-win situation for both you as well as the user. He finds a good business and you find a good client.
Free Web Directories: The Pros and Cons
Web directories are sometimes open source or for free. They do not charge anything for inclusion. Examples for such directories are Yahoo directory and the Open directory project. Social software and other advanced technology enabled the categorization in new ways. The disadvantage of the free directories is that they become so large that the data is hard to search. Another disadvantage is that the free directories do not bother to ask for the user details that are sent to you.
