Online Marketing Tools | Twitter for Business
By Forest Marie
Twitter has really been a powerhouse since 2008. The momentum is only growing with no signs of it slowing down. If you are one of those people that still does not “get” Twitter and why everyone is making such a big deal about it… Do not fear, as I was not long ago in your shoes. This article will help you “get” how you can use Twitter for business as one of the most powerful online marketing tools in your marketing arsenal.
You have 140 characters to effectively get your message out on Twitter. What should you write about? According to Twitter they want to know, “What are you doing?” That’’s exactly what you will see others talking about. It is not just talking about waking up, what you are eating, what movie you went to, etc. It is also about what project are you working on, are you doing a teleseminar, a webinar, did you just read a great article by an expert in your niche/industry and so on.
It is not just about stuff that promotes your business that is part of it, but it is also about adding value that may not point to your products and services as well as being humane by injecting some of your personal life into the mix.
Think of Twitter as one of your lists like an autoresponder, but it is public, you only have 140 characters for each message and it is much faster to build a massive list.
The power of this is when you have a list of thousands and you send out “Here is the blog I just wrote about xyz” or “Here is my favorite way to market online” or “Here is my new free ebook on xyz let me know what you think.” Whatever the case may be from calls, webinars, videos, blogs, ebooks, surveys, polls, etc. you will get massive results the bigger your Twitter follower list is.
The influence and simplicity of creating a massive Twitter list is what makes Twitter truly powerful.
Here are the basic steps to use Twitter for business:
1. Visit Twitter and create your account. Choose your name, if you are branding you or your business name. It wouldn”t hurt to have both.
2. Setup your profile. Go to “settings” and fill out all the information. In the short bio section put as many keywords that describe you and what you do. This will help people a. know what you do and b. find you when doing searches with those keywords. Make sure to put your website in the section for it and use either your company’’s website or a blog. If you are in Network Marketing or Direct Sales, stay away from putting duplicated websites. If you do not have a website that can tell the people more about you and that is not solely for advertising purposes then send them to one of your other social network profiles.
3. Find people to follow. You can find gurus in your industry and follow them. This will get some of their followers following you. You can also look at who the gurus are following and those following them and choose to follow people that fit your niche. A quicker way to do this is to use Mr. Tweet which will show you who you should be following in your industry with weekly updates. You can also do searches for keywords for your industry to find people to follow. You want 10% more people following you than you are following. There is a following limit once you hit 2000 people you are following, if you have 2000+ people following you the limit will be removed.
4. Get more followers. If someone hasn”t followed you back after a week unless they are some super guru you want to keep tabs on unfollow them. This helps unclutter your Twitter and is super important if you have want to surpass the 2k limit. You can use dossy.org/twitter/karma to bulk unfollow people that are not following you. Another tool similar but does not have bulk unfollow is friendorfollow.com. Do this once a week and get back to adding people and rinse and repeat to get a robust, responsive and massive list. A great tool to setup auto follows, auto unfollows, track keywords and track @ replies is tweetlater.com.
Remember to add value content that is yours and others that you recommend. Make some tweets personal. Also interact with at least 10 people on Twitter daily. Add new people and unfollow those not following you after a week. There are a ton of useful Twitter apps, find the ones like some suggested above that are time savers and make your Twitter experience as easy and simple as possible.
The keys are to not get overwhelmed, be consistent and add value. Do all of the above and you will be well on your way to creating a massive and responsive list for your business.
