Can Social Bookmarking Be A Useful Search Engine Optimization Tactic?
By James Woolley
Social bookmarking is a relatively recent phenomenon but it’’s now used quite a lot by both website owners and bloggers. It’’s not really very useful for getting your homepage ranked highly in the search engines, but it can be very effective at getting high rankings for your inner pages.
The key is to only submit to sites that are either likely to send you traffic, or who allow ”dofollow” links. The ”dofollow” point is important because if you are using them for SEO purposes, then you need the links to pass some link juice to your site so they rank higher in the search engines.
You should ideally link to your web pages or blog posts using the exact same title as your page, or at least use very similar keywords. These keywords should be those long-tail keywords or phrases that have very low competition in the search engines, and would therefore be easy to rank highly for with a few links from a couple of the social bookmarking sites.
The best social bookmarking strategy is to only submit your best quality content. This will help enhance your reputation and may even result in you gaining some followers on these sites who may well bookmark many of your future submissions.
You should not just submit your own content, however. It’’s very important that you submit many other quality websites and mix your own websites in amongst these submissions so it appears natural. If you just submit your own pages, then you will almost certainly end up losing your account because they will see you as a spammer.
The only real drawback to social bookmarking is that it can be very time-consuming. If you want to do it effectively then you will have to take the time to find other websites you can submit. You need to do this for each social bookmarking site you submit to as well.
So ultimately it’’s down to you whether you want to spend time on social bookmarking. You may prefer to outsource this work to someone else and concentrate on more productive activities. However, it’’s certainly an SEO technique that you should consider because it’’s one of the easiest ways to get decent search engine rankings for inner web pages and individual blog posts.
The trick is to target long-tail keywords and phrases both in your page and blog titles and in your link submissions. This is because the end result will be high search engine rankings for lots of low competition keywords, and therefore a significant amount of free and targeted search engine traffic in the long run.
