Niche Marketing 2.0 - The Evolution

Many Internet marketers have believed for quite some time that niche marketing provided the last great frontier for the web. But just like the evolution of the web, there’’s been an evolution of niche marketing as well.

Small niche websites that serve a specific group of people with a common interest and a desire for more information about that interest can be very powerful. They don”t require a huge investment in time and money to set up. And when done properly, they can create an ongoing stream of revenue, whether or not you”re paying attention.

As the Internet continued to evolve, however, the competition for small markets began to grow and they became more and more difficult to break into. More often than not, you could throw up a site that looked and functioned even better than the old days, yet it would be nearly impossible to drive traffic to it. The only alternative seemed to be pay-per-click and if you didn”t know what you were doing, you could run through your entire budget in a few short days.

But the cool thing about Internet marketing is this: when something no longer works, the smart people adjust and find a way to make it work again, usually better.

And that brings us to Niche Marketing 2.0.

This is the natural evolution of marketing to small, highly targeted niches. It continues the primary goal of solving a problem that people desperately need solved. And it continues to do this through small, 5-10 page websites. However, Niche Marketing 2.0 uncovers even smaller pieces of the puzzle. It focuses on very specific search terms. By doing this, traffic is naturally drawn to your web site and continues to grow naturally over time.

Here’’s how it works:

One: Amazon.com

We”re after a clearly defined niche market that is already populated by a group of hungry buyers. So, we”re going to start at Amazon.com. At the top of the first page, next to the search box, select the book department, and go. In the left hand navigation column, you”ll notice all the different book topics. Pick one that interests you. Let’’s say, Parenting & Families.

Now, you”ll notice a new set of topics in the left hand column. Pick one. Let’’s say, Family Relationships. And from that navigation column, let’’s choose Divorce.

Two: Reviews

Our first glance at the books on divorce will focus on the number of reviews for each book. Reviews indicate a market that’’s involved and active, which is what we”re looking for. At the time of this writing, you”ll see review numbers such as 149, 29, 90, 30, 62, 42 and so on. These numbers demonstrate a clearly-active group. If you were seeing numbers in the 0-10 range, then you might want to be a little concerned about your market.

Three: Amazon.com Numbers

Next, you want to take a look at the sales ranking of these titles. Helping Your Kids Cope With Divorce is #3,670 in Books. This can be found by clicking on the book cover and moving down the page to the section title Product Details. Amazon.com Sales Rank for this title is 3,670. Since they carry millions of titles, this is an excellent ranking. Make note of it.

Four: Competition

If you enter “divorce” in a Google search, you”ll find that there are over 66 million pages on the Internet with that word in the content. You can”t compete with 66 million pages. So you want to find a niche within divorce that you can go after. To do this, go to the Google External Keyword Tool (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal) and enter the term “divorce.” Then start going down the list and entering the supplied keywords into a Google search inside quotes (for example: “divorce dating”) until you find a group of keywords without tons of competition.

That easily, you”ve uncovered a niche market, plus accompanying keywords to get you set up with a Niche Marketing 2.0 property.
