On Page Seo - How To Select Keywords And Define Your Audience
By Tom Greaves
Page seo is the first thing any good search engine optimiser should consider before any other optimisation factor. A big part of on page optimisation is knowing who your target group are and which keywords you intent to optimise for with the intentions of drawing that particular group to your site.
In todays online market place it is simply not enough to decide which keywords generally describe your site, you must break these keywords down into long tail keywords as these are going to be easier to get ranked for and will bring you in more profitable traffic.
A generic phrase may be “search engine optimisation” but this term is highly competitve and will take a long time to get ranked on. So you should break it down into at least 20 variations such as “organic search engine optimisation service” etc… You should dedicate a page to optimising it for 1 keyword. This will increase the relevancy of your page and your root domain.
Another aspect of page seo in relation to keywords is, if you are selling a product or running some kind of online store you will want to optimise a page based on a product name. If you were selling cars you may use a keyword page such as “Audi A4 TDI 1.8 06″, sure the search volume for this phrase will be much less but if you are delivering that specific item your ROI is definately going to improve.
If your business is targeting a local geographical area you will need to tweat your page seo to rank higher for more specific search terms. For instance if you are a Solicitors firm in London you don”t simply want to advertise for “personal injury claims” or “corporate law” you will again need to dedicate a page to a more specific keyword like “personal injury solicitors firm london” or “corporate law firm london”. This may sound very basic but it is amazing how many online businesses lose out on customers simply because their on page seo has not been thought out correctly.
So, to summarise the above points and to expand a little on others. You should pick a good blend of generic and specific keywords, optimising each page for each keyword. General keywords should make up part of your title and meta tags. If possible try to optimise pages in favour of products or specific services and attempt using page seo to target local traffic if your site is providing products or services locally.
