Using SEO To Promote A Product Or Business
By Dominic Donaldson
Even the best idea in the world will not be a success without effective and well designed marketing behind it. Things we use every day like shoes, pens and cutlery are all promoted using billboards, TV and radio spots and newspaper and magazine advertising. This has been true for decades now and many big names have been built on the back of such promotion. But how does that approach today differ from fifty years ago?
Well the answer is not much; the principles are the same. The idea is to sell a product, image or idea and make money from it, but the way this is now done has changed. There are more avenues to explore and more opportunities to get a product recognized. Probably the most significant change is that now the internet is a vital part of any business, whether that’’s directly or indirectly.
The internet has increased the speed with which we do business and it now touches everyone’’s lives. It has had an incredible influence on the way we live and the products we are interested in. This is due to the amount of information that can be held on the net and the speed it can be delivered. Advertising has now begun to recognize the potential of this new space. One of the newest and most productive ways the internet has changed advertising is through SEO.
SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the best way to get a website recognized by search engine which are the doorway through which most people access the net. The better the SEO the more likelihood there is that your site will be accessed by more people outside of your immediate circle. There is also more chance of people being directed to your site when they might not necessarily be looking for what you provide or sell, again increasing the chances of making money.
The aim of SEO is to get you website listed as high up on a list generated by a search engine like Google or Yahoo and therefore increase the chances of people noticing you. The principle is the same as getting an advert on the front page of a national newspaper or a commercial in the half time break of a major football match. More and more companies are waking up to the potential that this has.
Traditionally the way to market a product has been to get a team of creative designers, copywriters and artists to come up with a successful slogan and produce a campaign. This still works successfully but, and this has always been the case, the outcome is completely unknown and a lot of money gets spent, some would say, wasted, on achieving a successful campaign. For every one idea that is a success there are a hundred that have not made it.
SEO is not a replacement for traditional advertising but it can produce results that compare very favorably. As a result companies are now directing some of the money in their marketing budgets towards SEO. Rather than throw money at something that may or may not work they are employing SEO companies to get their websites better placed on listings and selling their products directly from the website.
SEO is gaining recognition as a successful way of getting a message across and as a result it has seen enormous growth in the past few years. With the need to attract more and more people with less and less money due to the current economic climate it looks like more and more businesses will look towards SEO in the future.
