Author: D1 One life to live
"If I could only remember that the days were, not bricks to be laid row on row, to be built into a solid house, where one might dwell in safety and peace, but only food for the fires of the heart." --Edmund Wilson
Understanding that you have one life to live is the foundation principal of getting out of any rut! The day you understand this you'll feel like you just took a cosmic and apocalyptic punch to the stomach.
You'll start to realise that its better to take a chance, face the unknown and walk into that unknown than to stall, frightened and unsure, corroding your soul behind a desk or production line in a job you hate, a relationship that's smothering you or a lifestyle that's killing you. You only have one life to live and death is with you at all times, when you sit he sits, when you stand he stands, when you walk he walks with you a few feet behind you all the time and one day he is going to reach out and grab you and pull you from this world forever. Game over. You no longer exist.
Never forget how thin the line between life and death actually is. You have an entrance point, the day you were born and an exit point. That exit point, an unknown hole in time, which inspires fear in so many people, is, or rather should be your guiding light. It will illuminate your world if you allow it to and will connect you to the great unknown.
"The darkness of death is like the evening twilight; it makes all objects appear more lovely to the dying" --Jean Paul Richter
The solution to all life's problems
There is one solution to all of life's problems to the pain of this world, the heartache and the despair, the loneliness and fear. If you can do one thing then all of your problems will like smoke in the wind, turn to nothing and disappear. You have to fall in love with life.
The love you feel will give meaning to any past suffering and neutralise future suffering. Love often reappears when something is lost, a friend, a brother a sister. Also when an ability; the ability to walk, speak, see is lost or your own life is visibly heading towards its end. These experiences are the source of demonic dread, but on the flip side what they awaken is the great love of life that had been forgotten or gone unappreciated.
The tragedy is that the love is often awakened too late, or rather just late. I should have said this or done that. I should have spent more time out doing xyz, now I'm laid up in a hospital bed, cant walk, feed myself or even wipe my own ass.
So what needs to be understood is that non-critical fear, lack of security, hardship are NOT "bad". Anything that makes you appreciate what you have, who you have the potential you have is in fact good. It gives value to the things, people and places around you and in your life.
Do NOT seek comfort!
Many people seek out comfort and security as the highest aims blind to the fact that it is destroying the electric experience of full living. And they are afraid of leaving their job, changing their lifestyle because they fear the possible discomfort, pain or loss. The answer to that predicament is: GROW UP. Be a man / woman. Be an adult.
The fall out of what might happen if they make a change is that frightening that they are content to piss their life down a miserable drain just to avoid the discomfort. If they were in love with life they wouldn't be afraid at all. They wouldn't care. When you're in love, your laughing cause nothing matters other than the object of your love which feeds you energy, strength, courage and connects you directly to heaven itself.
Remember George Bailey in "it's a wonderful life" running through the streets, animated with love for life, for his wife and his children and nothing else mattered, a pending prison trip, his fortune lost, the despicable Potter - were all outshone by the electric feeling of love for life, for his life and everything he cared most about.
So how to fall in love with life? - Well hard-times seen in the right perspective will help. Don't shut yourself down, open up to yourself. Acknowledge your fears, issues and also your dreams. Then pluck up the courage to face all three. Your gonna die anyway, and your gonna feel pain anyway. So you might as well go for what you need to go for and in the attempt something magical might just happen to you.
What do you want?
"All the dream stealers Are lying in wait But if you wanna be a spaceman It's still not too late" - Oasis
A central question to ask is what do you want? What is most important? This is not always an easy question to get an answer to, from yourself. There is probably an enormous amount of things you do want to be, have and do. However, it is a common experience for people to feel actual physical stress as they start to think about them. I can only speculate, taking my own previous experience into account, that the stress is caused by knowing what you want but believing that it is impossible to achieve.
The clash between the desire and the PERCIEVED reality causes a dissonance, a very real stress that typically leads to the dreams being forgotten about, shelved away whilst the person "gets on" with life. Those dreams however, remain alive in the background the mind awaiting an opportunity to come into consciousness again in the hope of being accepted and acted upon.
What is most important? And what do you want to do? Whatever you have to do to answer these questions, do it.
Pursue maximum buzz
"All my posessions for a moment of time" --Queen Elizabeth I on her death bed
Maximum buzz is a feeling of totally enjoyment. Laughing to the point your jaws hurt and if you don't stop you think you are going to damage your internal organs, spending time with a beautiful woman / man, putting a smile on a child's face, helping someone out, facing and overcoming your fears, standing up for yourself. Again we come back to the one life to live principal and the importance of utilising your time in a way that reflects the reality of our shared experience i.e. we are all heading for the cemetery.
